Relapse? You do not have to give up.
Relapse after Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) treatment is rare, only about 3 percent of completed Basmi FIP courses. If it does happen, acting quickly and correctly is what matters. Since 2019 we have run clear support policies to help you start over.
Why does FIP relapse occur?
Relapse is uncommon, but when it happens there are two main causes. Knowing which one applies guides the right next step.
Incomplete viral suppression
If the virus is not fully suppressed during treatment, it can reactivate after the course ends. This tends to happen when the treatment period was too short or the dosage was not right for the cat.
Resistance to GS-441524
Research by Dr. Niels Pedersen at UC Davis links some relapses to viral resistance variants. These cases may need a dose adjustment or combination therapy with EIDD-1931, rather than simply repeating the same treatment.
If you suspect a relapse, arrange a blood test right away and share it with our team. We will guide you to the right treatment direction based on the cause.
Relapse support, four ways
Depending on your treatment history, you may qualify for support in one of the following four cases.
Full 84 day course with Basmi FIP
The most comprehensive support. If you complete the full 84 day course using only Basmi FIP products and a relapse occurs within 12 months of finishing, we offer a 50 percent discount on retreatment for up to 84 days.
- Full 84 day treatment using only Basmi FIP products
- Relapse within 12 months of completion
- Treatment start and end dates on hand
- Blood test results at the time of completion
Completed before 84 days with Basmi FIP
Many cats recover before 84 days. We respect the judgment of the owner and the veterinarian, so the discount can still apply to a course that ended early.
- Only Basmi FIP products used
- Relapse within 6 months of completion
- Blood tests confirming normal levels at completion
- No invasive procedures (neutering, vaccination) within 84 days of finishing
No blood test before finishing
If you did not confirm through a blood test that key levels had returned to normal before finishing, the discount does not apply. Do not give up, though. Share your case and our team will guide the best options, including extending the protocol, adjusting the dosage, or reviewing EIDD-1931 combination therapy.
Treated with another brand
Reach out if a relapse occurs after using another company's products. Because GS-441524 concentration, formulation and protocols differ by brand, we will review your full history and plan a new direction. The standard discount does not apply, but separate support may be considered case by case.
A note on invasive procedures: neutering and vaccination can suppress the immune system and raise the risk of relapse. We recommend avoiding them for at least 84 days after treatment ends. Speak with your veterinarian if you have just finished or are still in treatment.

Common questions about relapse
How do I check if it is a relapse? +
If loss of appetite, weight loss, fever, fluid building up again in the abdomen or chest, or eye changes appear after treatment, arrange a blood test right away and share the results with us. We will review the relapse together.
Can I use the same product and dosage as before? +
Not always. If the relapse is caused by a resistance mutation, repeating the same dose may have limited effect. After a case review, we decide whether to adjust the dose or add EIDD-1931.
How long does relapse treatment take? +
Depending on severity and cause, treatment takes about 2 weeks for mild cases and up to 12 weeks for severe ones. We provide an estimated length after reviewing your individual case.
What is EIDD-1931? +
EIDD-1931 is an antiviral that works through a different mechanism from GS-441524. It can be used alone or in combination when resistance to GS-441524 is suspected, and it is being studied at UC Davis as an option for resistant cases.
How long after sharing my case? +
We share a retreatment plan and any discount decision within 48 hours of reviewing your case.
